INSAT 3D :: India's Technological Advancement In Weather Forecasting and Meteorological Study.

After western and European countries like America and Europe, India is also taking a step forward in weather forecasting and meteorological studies.

India’s second exclusive meteorological satellite INSAT-3D was today successfully launched by a European rocket from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana, enhancing capability in weather forecasting, disaster warning and search and rescue services.

The satellite was placed in an elliptical Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by French commercial space transportation company Arianespace’s Ariane-5 rocket, 32 minutes and 48 seconds after its lift-off at 1.24 AM IST.

The spacecraft is having the goal to provide an operational, environmental & storm warning system to protect life & property and also to monitor earth’s surface and carryout oceanic observations and also provide data dissemination capabilities.

To accomplish these goals the INSAT –3D has following payloads on-board the spacecraft.
  • Metrological (MET),
  • Data Relay Transponder (DRT) and
  • Satellite Aided Search & Rescues (SAS&R)

The DRT will be used for receiving meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic data from remote, uninhabited locations over the coverage area from Data Collection Platforms (DCPs) like Automatic Weather Station, Automatic Rain Gauge and Agro Met Stations.

The imager can take weather pictures of the earth and has improved features compared to the payloads in KALPANA-1, the first in the series of exclusive meteorological satellites built by ISRO, and INSAT-3A, which have been providing weather services for the past one decade.

The search and rescue payload would pick up and relay alert signals originating from distress beacons of maritime, aviation and land based users to mission control centre to facilitate search and rescue operations.

The major users of Satellite Aided Search and Rescue service in India are the Indian Coast Guard, Airports Authority of India, Directorate General of Shipping, Defence Services and fishermen.

This is one of the great achievement of Indian Space and Research Organization (ISRO).
