Shared History Of Innovations Of Microsoft and Nokia

Windows  operating system maker, Microsoft, bought world's most famous mobile handset maker Nokia for 7.2 billion dollars. And now Nokia's all handset business will be handled by Microsoft. It's being said that combined these two tech giants will compete with Samsung and Apple.

Now that Nokia is the part of Microsoft, let see the shared history of Microsoft and Nokia's Innovations:

  • 1865 : Nokia established as a paper manufacturer company.
  • 1898 : Established Finnish Rubber Works
  • 1910 : Started providing electricity to Finnish homes
  • 1912 : Beginning of Finnish Cable Works
  • 1963 : Developed VHF radio and the Beginnings of telecommunications
  • 1967 : Creation of Nokia Corporation
  • 1971 : First Digital Exchange Switch
  • 1974 : Developed First car phones
  • 1975 : Microsoft formed by Bil Gates and Paul Allen
  • 1981 : Nokia created first international mobile network and IBM introduced its Personal Computer (PC) running MS-DOS version 1.0
  • 1985 : Nokia launched first portable phones and Microsoft launched Windows Operating System
  • 1987 : Nokia launched first handheld phone.
  • 1991 : First ever GSM call made
  • 1992 : First SMS message sent and Windows 3.1 released.
  • 1995 : Release of Windows 95 with 1 million copies sold in just 4 days.
  • 2000 : Launch of MSN messanger
  • 2001 : Launch of Xbox and Halo(game)
  • 2004 : Nokia 7710 touch screen phone launched
  • 2009 : Microsoft released Windows 7 and Bing
  • 2010 : Windows Phone 7 devices debut and Kinect for Xbox 360 launched.
  • 2011 : Nokia partnered with Microsoft and Microsoft acquired Skype and partnered  with Nokia.
  • 2012 : Nokia launched Lumia 920 smartphone and Microsoft released Window 8 operating system.
And in September 2013 Microsoft acquired Nokia for 7.2 billion dollars. Now, its being said that Microsoft will integrate Windows OS in all Nokia devices. And all Windows apps will be available within the device itself.

There are totally 99,139 Microsoft employees and 32,000 employees from Nokia will be transferred and 56,000 Nokia employee remains. Microsoft's gross margin on Lumia sales was $10 before acquisition and now it's more than $40.

So lets see what Microsoft brings to the Nokia devices from now on and at what point it will benefit to the users.
